Kyleigh's Law goes into effect
Posted on Friday, June 11th, 2010 at 2:47 pm
A new New Jersey law is requiring that drivers under the age of 21 add red decals to their license plates to denote their age for police officers to see.
The law, introduced as Kyleigh’s Law, was proposed after a teenager was killed by an inexperienced driver. The Department of Motor Vehicles expects 250,000 drivers to be affected by the law.
Small red stickers are supposed to be attached to the front and back license plates, letting authorities more quickly analyze whether a violation has been committed or not. The law includes new restrictions for younger drivers on night driving, passenger occupancy, and a ban on cell phone use, including hands-free devices. The decals cost $4, while the fine for not including them is $100.
Many parents have objected to the law, and are pressing lawmakers to repeal it. Too many are concerned that the stickers allow predators and stalkers to zero in on young girls.

Teen accident rate drops in New Jersey
Posted on Tuesday, April 6th, 2010 at 10:14 am
Drivers license restrictions may have had a positive effect on the car accident rate among New Jersey teenagers.
The AAA Foundation for Safety has reported that the number of fatal crashes among the state’s 17-year-old drivers has dropped by 32 percent. In addition, there was a 44 percent reduction in the crash rate among 17-year-olds during the midnight to 5 a.m. time frame. Officials credit this success to the Graduated Driver’s License program, which restricts the number of passengers allowed in the vehicle, increases the amount of practice driving required, and adds late-night curfews for teen drivers.
These proactive steps taken by our state government and police forces have made the road safer for all drivers. If you or a loved one has been injured in a car accident, contact the Edison personal injury lawyers of Levinson Axelrod, P.A. by calling 800-346-5529.
