NJ Transit has been ordered to pay a 19-year-old Belmar woman struck by a train in July 2006 a settlement of $1.2 million.

The girl, who was 16 at the time, exited a southbound train along with a number of other passengers. The group then began to move across the tracks, with the girl in front. She was struck by a northbound train moments later, suffering a fractured arm and leg and the subsequent amputation of her thumb.

NJ Transit modified signs at train stations across the state shortly after the accident to direct passengers disembarking from trains to move behind the crossing gate before attempting to move across the train tracks.

Witnesses say that the girl was within the crossing gate area when she was struck by the train.

The case was heard by Superior Court in Freehold.
