A novice sailor is still missing after a boating accident in the Long Island Sound and many are questioning whether the instructor should have let the sailors remain on the boat without life jackets.

A 30-year-old engineer went overboard during his first boating lesson. He and two other students were on a 23-foot Sonar boat with their instructor from the New York Sailing School when a storm came. The boat took a sharp turn and the instructor and the 30-year-old were thrown from the boat.

The instructor was able to get back on the boat and throw a flotation device, but the man was unable to reach because of the wind. The two other students soon lost sight of the man. Harbor police searched for the man, but nothing was found.
